The waterpump belt also drives the alternator, the P/S is off one of the other crank pulleys. Ditto for the A/C. The crank pulleys here have three grooves. Bet you've got a pre 70 waterpump pulley ... the misalignment angle in the short span that enters into the crankshaft pulley. This misalignment, as well as any misalignment caused by a worn-out water pump bearing, will create a higher force on one side of the belt ribs as it is being forced into the crankshaft pulley grooves, thus creating a likely condition for noise to occur. I would say it is the problem.Alternator belts are 'vee' belts,running in the vee grooves on the pulleys,both on the alternator and the crankshaft.The one you have,will skid over the surface,as its not a vee belt.Take it back to the garage,and do a bit of shouting.
