I shoot lighter loads, I don;t like beating up my 45's and I shoot twice a week at my local range, so I do burn up some ammo. I've dropped the min. book load quite alot and am using lighter recoil springs. One that will make an accurate cast bullet load of mid-range velocity for plinking and informal target shooting, and one for hunting anything from woodchucks to deer. Shoots any 44 mag round out there, ( can't say that about S&W ). Recoil is very manageable. Feels like a 22 with 44 special. Feb 23, 2015 · Years ago my wife won a box of 165gr RNFP for the 44 at a cowboy match. I load 5.0gr of Clays for that. It is a nice, light load and is accurate at 25 yards. For these lighter loads you do not want to use any of the magnum powders. Pick a mid range pistol powder like Unique, AA#5, etc.
Looks like a S&W model 66 with 4" bbl. Mine has been a great pistol. From what I've seen the two pistols are almost exactly alike. I have always considered Taurus a crap shoot as far as quality, but I got lucky with this particular pistol, and the .44 spl is a joy to shoot. I try not to make a .44 mag out of it and shoot mid range .44 spl loads ...
My long range accuracy hand load for the 25-06 Berger 115g in a 24” barrel goes 3225 fps (3300 fps in a 26” barrel). HSM Trophy Gold factory ammo goes 3125 fps. At elk altitude, that is plenty for flattening them at 400 yards. This is THEE most accurate bullet available in .25 caliber and it does an outstanding job on large game.
At the basic level, we're talking loads that run at .44 Special or .45 ACP pressure levels. Maybe .45 ACP +P. But the difference between a 15,500-psi .44 Special load and a 23,000-psi .45 ACP +P load is nothing to the .44 Magnum case and the firearm for which it is chambered. The SAAMI ceiling for the .44 Magnum is 36,000 psi.

Actually there are a lot of mid-range powders that will give you the velocity you want from that 5.5" barrel. I played with a bunch for 4" barrel 44 mag - you might find the info useful. _____

A 180 grain, 0.43 inch diameter bullet exiting the muzzle at 1,600 fps or better will immediately drop every human being on the face of the planet. Any .44 Magnum rifle will be FAR quieter than any shotgun.
For a rough equivalent of a factory 44 special load between 750 and 800 fps, I like 5.5 grains of Unique under a 240 grain lead bullet. For a "magnum" midrange I like a whole lot, try 7.5 grains of Unique under the same bullet for around 1k. 44 Magnum; Centerfire Rifle. ...
